At SECU Family House, compassion and community go hand in hand. Our heartwarming annual fundraiser, Men Who Cook, brings together dedicated advocates like Neil and Jeremiah, State Employee’s Credit Union employees who proudly represent the organization amongst a diverse array of local chef teams. We’re excited to introduce you to Neil (left) and Jeremiah (right), two SECU employees who have embraced the Family House cause with open hearts.
Neil’s Journey:
Neil’s connection with SECU Family House began in 2014 when he first learned about the organization while working in the Raleigh area. He was introduced to the house in Chapel Hill, but it was during an audit assignment in Winston-Salem that Neil got the opportunity to witness the profound impact the Family House had on families in need. Since then, he has been an ardent supporter, especially after relocating to Winston in 2020.
As the COVID pandemic presented challenges for community involvement, Neil found creative ways to contribute. His involvement started with branch donation drives, where he became the unofficial delivery driver for donated goods at SECU Greensboro branches. His dedication and passion led him to join the Donor and Community Relations committee for the Family House.
Why the Mission Connects to Neil:
For Neil, the Family House mission aligns with his belief that those facing medical hardships deserve a comforting haven amidst their challenges. Providing families with a clean, safe, and affordable place to stay, along with nourishing meals and warm hospitality, can ease the burden during tough times. He finds joy in knowing that his contributions, no matter how small, can make a difference in the lives of others.
Neil’s Encouragement:
To those considering getting involved with the SECU Family House, Neil’s message is simple: Just do it! Starting with a donation box at your workplace is an easy yet impactful way to begin. The Family House team provides all the necessary support and materials, making the process seamless. And if you’re passionate about something specific, rest assured there are diverse opportunities for everyone, whether it’s preparing meals, volunteering, or setting up more donation boxes to meet the ever-present need.
Jeremiah’s Journey:
Jeremiah’s connection with the Family House started over a decade ago when he attended a SECU Foundation presentation and tour at the Chapel Hill location. Later, after relocating to Kernersville, he was thrilled to see the Winston-Salem Family House become a reality. Jeremiah’s involvement mainly revolves around fundraising projects and meal preparation, along with his co-workers in Kernersville.
Having heard stories from guests and seen the positive impact firsthand, Jeremiah eagerly volunteers his time and efforts to support the Family House. He is particularly excited about participating in the “Men Who Cook” fundraiser this year, contributing his culinary skills to a meaningful cause.
Why the Mission Connects to Jeremiah:
The Family House mission strikes a chord with Jeremiah, who acknowledges that health issues and caregiving responsibilities affect people from all walks of life. The Family House’s warm and supportive environment provides much-needed comfort and stability to families facing challenging circumstances. In times of stress and worry, the Family House becomes a place of respite, where guests can find solace and care from a compassionate community.
Jeremiah’s Encouragement:
For those contemplating involvement with the Family House, Jeremiah emphasizes the special nature of this organization. With numerous ways to contribute, Jeremiah’s personal passion lies in cooking and nurturing others. Preparing a meal for the Family House guests can be a deeply gratifying activity for families, work groups, or any community that seeks to give back. The act of sharing a warm meal becomes a symbol of support and love for those facing difficult times.
Neil and Jeremiah’s journeys exemplify the dedication and compassion of State Employee’s Credit Union employees towards the Family House mission. We’re endlessly grateful for the myriad of ways that SECU and their employees continue to support our mission!
