Volunteers Honored for their Service
The SECU Family House is pleased to announce that Family House volunteers Raul and Susan Colon and Debbie Marshall won regional philanthropy awards for their service.
Given by the NC Triad Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the distinguished award recipients will be honored at the 2019 National Philanthropy Day Luncheon on Monday, November 25.
Debbie Marshall
Nominated by Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation and SECU Family House
Debbie Marshall is the consummate board member: engaged, well-connected, strategic, and likeable. Marshall currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation and is a member of the Women’s Council. She also serves on the SECU Family House board, an organization she has chaired in the past. Her passion for both organizations is evident. When talking about either, Marshall uses the word “we.” She cares deeply about the missions of both non-profits, and the communities they serve. She has also volunteered her time and knowledge to Rotary and served as board chair at the Enrichment Center and the Central Carolinas Chapter National MS Society. One nominator said of Marshall, “She embodies the spirit of philanthropy and community in all that she does for Winston-Salem. She is an outstanding advocate for the organizations that she is involved with. She has a tremendous ability to connect people and she works tirelessly to strengthen our charitable community.”
Raul and Susan Colon
Nominated by Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, SECU Family House, Kaleideum and a/perture
In only a few years as Winston-Salem residents, Raul and Susan Colon have already contributed generously in their time, leadership, and resources to various community programs, projects, and organizations. Raul serves as a member of the SECU Family House Board of Directors and is a board member for a/perture, the downtown Winston-Salem community cinema. He also works with the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce – Under 40 and the BB&T Lighthouse project. Susan is involved with the Junior League of Winston-Salem, co-chairing Boutique and their Tour of Fine Spaces, and the Women’s Council of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation Executive Board. She also volunteers at Reynolda Church, New Benefactors of Old Salem, Second Harvest Food Bank, Young Leaders United with United Way, and Rotary. As a couple, Raul and Susan co-chaired the 2019 Kaleidoscope Ball for Kaleideum and helped raise $212,000. They also served on the planning committee for the Women’s Council’s Bourbon and Brews event raising over $63,000 to support a new mobile mammogram unit for the community.
