Residents of the Triad know very well how lucky we are to have the nationally recognized medical facilities, top medical professionals and leading scientific research teams available to us when and if we need them. However, with a reputation for some of the best care in the nation right here in our own backyard, we sometimes forget that we’re not the only ones using them. For those patients undergoing treatment for critical illness and their families and caregivers from out-of-town, a stay in the hospital can create some difficult hardships.

A $1 million lead gift from the Richard J. Reynolds, III and Marie M. Reynolds Foundation in 2007 was the spark that ignited the Family House project. This gift represents a deep commitment to a great need in our community. Last fall, the Reynolds Foundation collaborated with the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation to help facilitate SECU’s $2 million challenge grant to build the House.

Now, the Richard J. Reynolds, III and Marie M. Reynolds Foundation has announced a $55,000 grant as an additional challenge to raise the final $500,000 of our $5 million capital goal:

“The members of the Grant Committee of the Richard J. Reynolds, III and Marie Mallouk Reynolds Foundation seek to make a positive impact on the Winston-Salem Community. We are convinced that the Hospital Hospitality House is one of those opportunities that Josh and Marie would want us to support. We believe that this effort will have a long lasting and positive impact on our city and county and benefit people of limited resources at a time when they need help the most. This Foundation provided lead funds to purchase the property and has recently made another gift as a challenge to others to help make the completion of the project a reality. It must succeed. Please help!”

E. Norwood Robinson, trustee

Our Board expresses sincere gratitude to the Reynolds Foundation Trustees for their inspiration and encouragement in building this comforting “Home Away from Home” for our hospital families.

He’s tired, he’s frightened, and he has nowhere to sleep. His wife is in critical condition in a Winston-Salem hospital, and home is a three-hour drive each way. There is no money for a hotel. So he rolls his jacket into a pillow and tries to doze in the visitor’s lounge. He will do the same thing the next night … and the next.

Take this scenario and multiply it by several hundred every night, and you get a sense of the size and scope of the problem.

Nationally acclaimed for the scope and caliber of their services, Winston-Salem’s two major medical centers serve thousands of individuals from across North Carolina and beyond – an estimated 128,000 out-of-town patients a year.
Some are there for weeks.

Families with children being treated at Forsyth Medical Center or Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center can find affordable lodging at the Ronald McDonald House on Hawthorne Road.

Adults being treated here have no such option.

But a solution is near.

The SECU Family House on the Richard J. Reynolds, III & Marie M. Reynolds Campus held an update presentation for donors and supporters on the progress of the capital campaign. Nearly 50 people were in attendance, and enthusiasm was high as the Board introduced the professional team assembled to build the House. As project manager, Robin Team of Carolina Investment Properties will ensure that the 40+ guest room facility will be built in a cost-effective and efficient manner so that our families who are in medical crisis will no longer have to camp out in hospital waiting rooms or sleep in their cars. Working closely with our architect, Carlos Espinosa of Thomas Hughes Architects, Robin will coordinate the project and is a key component to our success. The Board is thrilled to have him as our partner in this endeavor.

The Richard J. Reynolds, III and Marie M. Reynolds Foundation made a leadership gift to the Hospital Hospitality House of Winston-Salem. The strength of this million dollar gift to support the cause has been the foundation of our project. Because of their partnership and desire to help provide lodging for adult patients and their families who travel to our community for medical care, in October 2009 we were able to secure a $2 million challenge grant from the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation. This grant will allow us to serve more than 2,000 families a year.
